I know most you RED guys out there are fans of the workflow in the FCP environment (some even in Premiere), but I thought I would pass along this detailed guide from AVID, “Using RED files in an AVID-based workflow.” This 12-page step-by-step guide has all the details on the steps required to move RED R3D files through an HD post production process using AVID Media Composer v3.0.5 or later Avid Symphony v3.0.5 edit systems. As it turns out, for DS Nitris conform, a standard DPX workflow is used.
It’s good to see AVID coming out with detailed support, but with FCP being the current standard environment for working with RED files, AVID seems a little behind the pack. With the younger filmmakers and Indie guys all going the FCP route, some may wonder who will be left to adopt the AVID-Based workflow? If you are considering an AVID system to work these large files, you’ll most likely need a MAJOR post production equipment re-haul.
